The Abia State Government has called on residents of Amanato Eziama Nneato in Umunneochi Local Government Area to maintain peace with their neighbours in Umuacha Umuobi autonomous community, following the alleged arrest of some indigenes by security operatives.
The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Caleb Ajagba, made the appeal while addressing women from Amanato Eziama Nneato who staged a protest at the Government House over the development.
Ajagba assured that the land dispute said to have triggered the arrests would be thoroughly investigated, adding that the government would also engage the Umuacha Umuobi community to ensure an amicable resolution.
He commended the women for conducting their protest peacefully and refraining from violence.
“We have listened to your complaints. We will convey your concerns to His Excellency and assure you that the matter will be addressed, as this administration is committed to the welfare of the people,” Ajagba said.
Earlier, the protesting women alleged that several male members of their community had gone into hiding due to what they described as persistent arrests by security personnel.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Mrs Janeth Nwankwo linked the arrests to a long-standing land dispute with their neighbours, which she said has lasted over four decades and is currently before the Court of Appeal in Owerri.
She listed some of those allegedly arrested to include Christian Obidike, Chidiebube Alaebo, Oliver Maduwugwu and Chibuzor Nwafor, adding that the community’s President General, Simon Ndubuisi, was recently released after spending two weeks in police custody.
According to her, the arrests have forced many youths and husbands to flee or hide in the bush, while others have relocated for fear of further clampdown.
She appealed to the state governor to intervene in the matter, pledging the continued support of the community for the administration.
