
The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into deep mourning following the tragic death of popular Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo.
Reports revealed that the actor died on Monday night at Evercare Hospital in Lekki, Lagos, after a battle with liver cancer. He was 40 years old.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed on Tuesday by former Big Brother Naija star and Director of Communications of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Boma Akpore. According to him, Ekubo’s remains have been deposited at Ebony Vaults in Ikoyi, Lagos.
The news of his death has left fans and colleagues devastated, with emotional tributes pouring in across social media.
Actor Godwin Nnadiekwe expressed his grief in an emotional Instagram post, writing:
“I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alex Ekubo.”
Veteran filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen, who introduced Ekubo to Nollywood, described the actor’s death as shocking and painful. Reflecting on their journey together, Imasuen recalled giving Ekubo his very first movie role, which launched his successful acting career.
Several top celebrities and industry figures also paid tribute to the late star. Actress Funke Akindele remembered their close friendship and the affectionate nickname “Ore mi” that Ekubo often called her.
Other celebrities who mourned the actor include Bolanle Ninalowo, Peter Okoye, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Omoni Oboli, Mo Abudu, Kate Henshaw, Yvonne Jegede, Kunle Remi and Ruth Kadiri.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore described Ekubo as a “rare talent,” while broadcaster Oseni Rufai simply wrote, “Rest well Alex.”
