The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially declared Christopher Enweremadu, a former commissioner in Abia State, wanted over serious allegations of criminal conspiracy, diversion of public funds, stealing, and money laundering.

According to a public notice signed by Dele Oyewale, spokesperson for the EFCC, and released on Wednesday, Enweremadu’s last known address was listed as the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Umuahia, Abia State.

The commission is now urging members of the public with credible information about his whereabouts to come forward. “The public is hereby notified that CHRISTOPHER ENWEREMADU, whose photograph appears above, is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in an alleged case of criminal conspiracy, diversion of public funds, stealing and money laundering,” the notice read in part.

“Anybody with useful information as to his whereabouts should please contact the Commission in its Ibadan, Uyo, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Benin, Makurdi, Kaduna, Ilorin, Enugu, Kano, Lagos, Gombe, Port Harcourt or Abuja offices.”

Enweremadu previously served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs under the administration of former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu. His name has surfaced in multiple investigations concerning alleged financial mismanagement of local government allocations in the state.

In December 2024, a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja ordered a comprehensive probe into the disbursement and usage of federal allocations to all 17 local government areas (LGAs) in Abia State between 2019 and 2023.

As part of the same legal action, the court also instructed the EFCC to submit a detailed report of its findings. Furthermore, it ordered the temporary seizure of international passports belonging to Enweremadu, Erondu Uchenna Erondu—an aide to former Governor Ikpeazu—and Joy Nwanju, a permanent secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

The court order followed an ex parte motion filed by a civil society activist, who alleged that billions of naira earmarked for local governments were misappropriated by key state officials during the stated period.

The EFCC has not yet disclosed further details about the specific transactions allegedly linked to Enweremadu, but the declaration of him as a wanted individual marks a significant escalation in the investigation.
