The killing of Master Daniel (Abaleke) Anyanwu, a native of Umuahum Ndegwu Community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in the state capital.
The victim was reportedly shot dead by unidentified assailants at his Point of Sale (POS) outlet near Everyday Supermarket, Control Post, along World Bank Road in Owerri.
According to available accounts, the attackers struck while the young man was attending to his business, leaving him critically wounded.
He was subsequently rushed to Vaden Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.
Family sources disclosed that his father, Mr. Emma, and other relatives have been thrown into mourning over the tragic development.
The deceased, said to be the only son in a family of three children, is survived by two sisters.
It was gathered that the family opted for immediate burial, and he has been laid to rest at his Umuahum Ndegwu residence.
Eyewitnesses and residents said the attackers demanded his money bag, but he reportedly hesitated, prompting them to open fire.
The gunmen were said to have fled the scene on a motorcycle with the stolen cash.
Residents of Ndegwu Community described the late Anyanwu as calm, respectful and peace-loving, lamenting that his death has created a vacuum in the area.
Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command has been urged to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Stakeholders have also called on the state government and security agencies to strengthen strategies to combat rising criminal activities, particularly the use of motorcycles in carrying out attacks.
