A Police officer identified as Inspector Okolie Amechi has been shot dead by his 10-year-old son in an accidental discharge incident while on duty at a bank in Awka, Anambra State.
The incident occurred at about 9:40 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, 2026, when the officer’s three sons visited him at work. The boys were identified as Dominion Vincent (10), Wisdom Vincent (8), and Emmanuel Vincent (6).
According to the report by the state police command, Dominion was playing with his father’s AK-47 rifle, which had been cocked and left unsecured without the safety catch. The boy unknowingly pulled the trigger from behind his father, fatally shooting him in the spine.
The same bullet reportedly struck six-year-old Emmanuel, who sustained injuries to his back and right hand.
Both the officer and his son were rushed to Amaku Specialist Teaching Hospital in Awka. Inspector Amechi was pronounced dead on arrival, while Emmanuel is said to be responding to treatment.
The rifle, identified by breach number BA360691 and loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, has been retrieved and secured.
The Command while wishing the second victim a quick recovery, condoles the family and friends of the late inspector.
