Team Edo showed impressive strength at the NYG 2025 zonal qualifiers in Uyo, with their female teams leading the charge across multiple sports.
At the West Itam Sports Centre, the female handball team crushed Akwa Ibom 20–2 in a one-sided encounter, sealing their ticket to the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.
In football, the Edo girls proved just as clinical. Playing at the Uyo Township Stadium, they overpowered Akwa Ibom 2–0, thanks to a brace from Favour Enodumwenben, who scored in each half to book their qualification in style. The result has already marked them out as one of the top contenders for Asaba 2025.
The hockey team also delivered, dispatching Bayelsa 2–0 with goals from Omoregie Favour and Emmanuel Favour. The men’s side, however, narrowly lost 3–2 to Rivers. Both male and female hockey fixtures continue on Monday.
Not all the results went Edo’s way. In Abula, both male and female teams were eliminated after losing to Rivers State in straight sets. The male basketball team also suffered heartbreak—after falling 21–17 in their first game against Rivers, an injury in the second game left them unable to continue, forcing a walkover.
In beach volleyball, Edo’s clash with Akwa Ibom was postponed due to heavy rainfall and will resume Monday. Meanwhile, the female indoor volleyball team kept Edo’s momentum alive, booking qualification with their next game against Bayelsa scheduled for tomorrow.
Elsewhere, Edo’s young male baseball team impressed by finishing second to qualify, while victories in male and female rugby as well as male cricket added more tickets to Asaba.
As the qualifiers continue, Edo’s performances reflect the state’s growing investment in youth sports. With several teams already through and more results to come, expectations are high for a strong showing at the National Youth Games.
