The Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has expressed deep sorrow following the devastating flood that claimed the lives of eight residents—including three children—and ravaged more than 800 farmlands in parts of Afikpo and Abakaliki Local Government Areas.

The deadly flood swept through Enohia Itim and Kpoghirikpo communities in Afikpo on August 1, also affecting Azuoto Okpuitumo in Abakaliki. Authorities and residents are still grappling with the scale of the damage.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Monday Uzor, Governor Nwifuru extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and those who lost homes, crops, and property.

“I received with deep sadness the news of the devastating flood that recently affected the Enohia Itim and Kpoghirikpo communities in Afikpo and Azuoto Okpuitumo in Abakaliki LGA. I sincerely condole the families who lost loved ones, as well as all who suffered losses during this unfortunate incident,” the governor stated.

The governor pledged to mobilize immediate relief efforts and long-term support, adding that his administration would collaborate with community leaders and disaster response agencies to ensure prompt delivery of aid and rehabilitation resources.

“As a government, we stand with you in this moment of grief. I assure you that my administration will provide the necessary support to help you recover and rebuild,” he said.

Governor Nwifuru also used the occasion to highlight the growing threat of climate change, warning that extreme weather events like this flood may become more frequent.

“This tragedy is a sober reminder of the urgent need to integrate climate change considerations into our flood risk management strategies,” he said, urging residents to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures during the rainy season.

As the state begins recovery efforts, the governor’s office said it would also explore long-term environmental planning to mitigate the impact of future disasters.
