Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has issued a stern directive to Local Government Chairmen and Councillors, urging them to either reside in their council areas or resign from their positions.
The governor made the statement during the 10th Stakeholders Meeting of his administration, held at the Imo State Traditional Rulers Council Secretariat, Mbari, Owerri.
“This is not a political gathering. It is a strategic session with stakeholders and leaders of our 656 autonomous communities to make bold decisions on security, education, and healthcare in the interest of the people,” Uzodimma said.
He emphasized that local government administration must be rooted in local communities and not managed remotely from urban centers. “No government can be effective without grassroots mobilization,” he added, calling for greater synergy among stakeholders to improve governance and service delivery.
As part of new reforms, the Governor announced the establishment of Local Government Implementation Committees. These committees will focus on executing key initiatives in security, education, health, and youth empowerment.
He also revealed plans to build a world-class health center in every community and a general hospital in each local government area. In line with this, he urged leaders to promote enrollment in the ongoing Imo Social Health Insurance Program (IMSHIP). “Show leadership. Help your people access quality healthcare,” Uzodimma said.
Addressing the youth, the Governor encouraged a shift in mindset. “Our young people must embrace the dignity of labour and tap into opportunities through our skill acquisition programmes,” he stated, highlighting the need for entrepreneurship and innovation.
Governor Uzodimma also disclosed policy reforms aimed at strengthening the Imo Housing Corporation through public-private partnerships. He warned that illegal structures on government land will be demolished in line with new urban development regulations.
The interactive session featured contributions from various groups, culminating in a vote of confidence passed by attendees in support of the Governor’s mandate.
Dignitaries present included Deputy Governor Lady Chinyere Ekomaru and her husband, members of the National and State Assemblies, local government officials, traditional rulers, community presidents-general, youth and women leaders, among others.
