In a sweeping push toward sustainable infrastructure, the Abia State Government has unveiled a bold initiative to deploy electric-powered mass transit buses by November 2025. The announcement, made during a media briefing at Government House, signals a major step in Governor Alex Otti’s modernization agenda.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, confirmed that the electric buses—manufactured in China—have already been fully paid for. He added that designated routes have been mapped out, and logistics are nearing completion for the program’s full launch.

Clean Energy and Clean Water

In a parallel drive to improve living standards, Governor Otti is also set to commission multiple water rehabilitation projects in Aba and Umuahia. These include the Integrated Wash Accelerator Programme (IWAP), anchored at the newly constructed Wash Facility at Okigwe Park. The initiative, designed to restore potable water, sanitation, and hygiene across Abia, aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 6 and the state’s Zero Defecation Drive.

“Contracts have been awarded to competent firms like Vena Cava Limited,” said Kanu. “Modern solar-powered systems will guarantee sustainability and reliability.”

Solar Revolution in Health Sector

Also on the governor’s commissioning calendar is a state-of-the-art 150kV solar power plant with a 430kW battery storage system. The facility will provide clean, reliable power to health institutions, reduce reliance on diesel, and improve service delivery across the state.

Fueling Talent and Culture

On July 25, Abia will launch a Creative Talent Programme across its 17 local government areas, aimed at discovering and nurturing young creative minds. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, the program is part of a larger bid to position Aba as a UNESCO Creative City.

“This is about giving Abia youth a global stage,” Kanu stated. “It’s a bold step in grassroots empowerment through cultural innovation.”

Security and Urban Renewal in Full Swing

Kanu also disclosed that ₦4.1 billion has been raised through the Abia State Security Trust Fund. The funds are being channeled into security upgrades and beautification works at key locations, including FMC Umuahia and the Osisioma Interchange in Aba.

Currently, work is active at 53 project sites statewide under the urban renewal program.

Resurrecting the Water Grid

Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, emphasized efforts to restore pipe-borne water across the state. The Aba Regional Water Scheme—covering Ogbor Hill, CKC, and Ariaria—will undergo a two-phase overhaul to meet World Health Organization standards. Phase one focuses on water treatment facilities; phase two will handle transmission and distribution.

Aesthetic Enhancements: Murals and Monuments

Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Mr. Matthew Ekwuruibe, revealed ongoing projects to install murals and monuments in strategic urban spaces, further complementing the state’s beautification and identity renewal efforts.

Abia’s Transformation is Underway

From clean transit to solar-powered healthcare, creative talent hunts to UNESCO aspirations, the Otti administration is charting a bold course toward a greener, more inclusive, and globally connected Abia.
