A tragic scene has unfolded in the bustling city of Aba, Abia State, when a towering advertising billboard collapsed during a heavy downpour, crushing multiple commercial tricycles along the busy Aba-Owerri Road and leaving a trail of destruction and panic in its wake.
The incident occurred at the Salad Market junction—one of the city’s busiest intersections—where strong winds uprooted the massive billboard, sending it crashing down onto tricycles waiting to load passengers. The collapse also brought down high-tension power lines, plunging the area into darkness.
As of press time, the exact number of casualties had yet to be confirmed, but eyewitnesses said several individuals—including drivers and passengers—suffered varying degrees of injuries. Some fatalities were feared, while many victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
“I saw people screaming, trapped under the metal,” said Mr. Chike, an eyewitness who was on the scene moments after the collapse. “By the time fire service officials arrived, volunteers had already begun rescuing victims.”
The wreckage reportedly involved at least nine tricycles, many of which were completely flattened under the weight of the fallen structure.
Structural engineers who visited the site blamed the disaster on poor construction practices, citing a weak foundation and lack of proper soil testing. They emphasized that safety standards appear to have been overlooked, despite the billboard’s strategic location in a high-traffic area.
Mrs. Blessing, another eyewitness, described the ordeal as a “wake-up call” for government regulators. “There needs to be stricter oversight on these billboard structures. This should never have happened,” she said.
Meanwhile, as the community grapples with the aftermath, calls are growing louder for authorities to conduct an urgent audit of all billboard structures across the city, ensuring that public safety is no longer compromised in the name of advertisement.
