Two senior police officers have been killed and three inspectors injured after unidentified gunmen attacked a divisional police headquarters in Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State with explosives.

The attack occurred at the Uratta-Eziukwu divisional police headquarters, damaging part of the building and a police patrol van in a fire triggered by the explosion.

The Abia State Police Command said it had restored calm to the area, adding that no firearms or ammunition were stolen during the assault.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, and made available to coastreportersnews, the command said the injured inspectors were receiving medical attention.

The Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, led tactical teams to the scene, where they conducted a search of the surrounding areas as part of efforts to secure the location and track down the attackers.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti also visited the facility to assess the damage caused by the assault.

The police said security operations had been intensified to identify and arrest those responsible, adding that operational and intelligence resources would be deployed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The command expressed condolences to the families of the slain officers and the wider police community, while urging residents to remain calm and vigilant and provide credible information that could assist the investigation.

The incident adds to a series of deadly attacks on security personnel in different parts of the country.

Five months ago, 17 officers were reportedly killed during a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

Last month, a police officer was among five people killed in separate attacks in Barkin Ladi and Mangu Local Government Areas of Plateau State, despite a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on the affected areas.

In November 2024, gunmen reportedly killed a police officer during an attack on a patrol team along Asaga Road in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
