The Imo State Police Command, in collaboration with the Military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies, has launched a coordinated manhunt for armed robbers who attacked travellers along the Okigwe–Owerri Road in the early hours of Thursday, May 8, 2025.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, the assailants operated in three separate groups, blocking the highway between Umunna in Onuimo Local Government Area and parts of Okigwe LGA. The attackers fired shots indiscriminately, creating widespread panic and setting several vehicles, including lorries and motorcycles, on fire. Casualties have also been reported, though details remain unclear.
DSP Okoye stated that the Police swung into action immediately after receiving a distress call. Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma led a joint tactical team to the scene, where they provided assistance to victims and launched a full-scale search operation for the suspects.
“A coordinated cordon and search effort is underway, with operatives combing nearby forests and surrounding areas believed to be the suspects’ hideouts,” Okoye said.
The Commissioner has vowed that the operation will continue until all perpetrators are captured and prosecuted. He condemned the attack as a cowardly act of terrorism and called on residents to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative.
DSP Okoye also urged the public to provide credible information that could aid the investigation, assuring residents that the Police and other security agencies are committed to restoring peace and protecting lives and property throughout the state.
