The Imo State Police Command has demoted a sergeant and reprimanded two inspectors after a viral video captured officers assaulting a civilian along the Owerri–Aba road.

The officers—Inspector Ofem Obongha, Inspector Obinna Okereke, and Sergeant Anayo Ekezie—are all attached to the Safer Highway Unit. A disciplinary review, including an orderly room trial, found the officers guilty of misconduct under the Nigeria Police Force Code of Conduct.

Sergeant Ekezie, who was seen using his assigned smoke gunner during the assault, has been demoted to Corporal. Inspectors Obongha and Okereke received severe reprimands for negligence and poor supervisory conduct.

Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, condemned the incident, labeling it a clear violation of human rights and the Force’s ethical standards. He reaffirmed the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and pledged that erring officers will face strict consequences.

The Commissioner urged the public to report any police abuse to the Complaints Response Unit (CRU), X-Squad, or via the hotlines 08033424051 and 08148024755.

He assured the public of the police’s continued commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of civil liberties.
