Panic gripped the College of Nursing, Umulogho, in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State after suspected assassins allegedly beheaded a female student of the institution, identified as Wendy Achumba.
The student, who had reportedly completed her midwifery programme and was undergoing post-basic training, was allegedly murdered in her off-campus apartment.
Sources said the deceased hailed from Isiala-Ngwa in Abia State.
Confirming the incident on Friday, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, said the police had launched a manhunt for those responsible for the killing.
“The Command is aware of the tragic incident involving the death of a female student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, whose body was discovered in her private off-campus apartment,” Okoye stated.
He explained that following a distress report, the Divisional Police Officer and other operatives immediately visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment, after which the corpse was recovered and deposited in a morgue.
Okoye added that investigations had commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the gruesome killing and ensure the arrest of all those involved, noting that one suspect had already been apprehended and was undergoing preliminary interrogation.
“Consequently, the Command appeals to students and members of the public to remain calm, assuring that the situation is under control and that every effort is being made to ensure those behind the act are brought to justice,” the statement added.
