The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed June 30, 2026, to deliver its ruling on an application by human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, seeking the restoration of his bail.

The decision was announced on Wednesday by Justice Mohammed Umar during proceedings in the case instituted by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Sowore is currently facing prosecution over comments in which he allegedly referred to President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal.”

At the hearing, Sowore’s counsel, R.O. Adakole, representing lead lawyer Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), appealed to the court to release the activist into the custody of his legal team pending the ruling on the bail application.

Adakole argued that Sowore had demonstrated respect for the judicial process by consistently appearing before the court since the commencement of the trial and had never violated his bail conditions.

However, Justice Umar declined the request, explaining that he needed sufficient time to review the affidavits and other legal documents submitted by both parties before reaching a decision. Despite repeated pleas from the defence, the judge refused to grant Sowore temporary release.

The case has continued to attract public attention, with supporters and rights advocates expressing concern over the revocation of Sowore’s bail.

Recall that on June 16, 2026, the court revoked Sowore’s bail and issued a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear for a scheduled court session.

During that proceeding, DSS counsel Akinlolu Kehinde informed the court that Sowore was absent without providing any explanation and urged the court to revoke his bail.

With the ruling now set for June 30, all eyes will be on the Federal High Court as it determines whether Sowore’s bail will be reinstated.
